Some consolation on Champions Day

Corne Spies and the connections of Hazy Dazy were visibly disappointed when she was beaten into second in the Grade 2 SA Oaks Trial and failed to land the 2026 Triple Tiara. But Hazy Dazy was widely complimented for running a brave race and giving her all.

Corne was also hailed for his good sportsmanship by on-course presenter Neil Andrews, and he said: “It was not to be, but if you can’t take the losses with the wins, you shouldn’t be in racing.”

Co-owner Rob MacNab echoed that and said: “What matters is that Hazy Dazy has taken all of us on a wonderful journey. And, after all, she has some of her three-year-old career and her older career still ahead of her, for which we are thankful."

The Spies team enjoyed a measure of consolation when Rock Of Bismantova led from start to finish to win Race 11 over 1160m for Macnab Suren Govender and Chris Brown.

Corne said: “Trent Mayhew rode a very good race, listened to instructions and proved that, after Hazy Dazy’s disappointment, he is still the jockey I think he is.”

Mayhew said: “Rock Of Bismantova doesn’t like the stick, so I tried to keep it off him for as long as I could. He just needed a reminder close home so we didn’t get caught on the line.”

This was Rock Of Bismantova’s fourth career win. He is a son of Futura out of a Judpot mare, who surprised Corne early with the pace he shows despite his stout pedigree.

A third-generation member of the renowned Spies Racing family, 29 year old Xander Spies enjoyed a pinnacle day in his and his famous family’s racing life at Turffontein last Saturday when Trent Mayhew guided Hazy Dazy to a sensational victory in the second leg of the SA Triple Tiara.

The name Spies has been around SA racing for over a half century. Xander’s grandfather Tobie, a revered trainer who is still at the yard every day, laid the foundation, while his father, Corné Spies, continues as a celebrated trainer and a man who mastered the art of travelling horses.

Corne Spies also won the Northern Cape award for Champion Racehorse Owner in the 2009/2010 racing season and during the 2014 and 2015 racing seasons, he raced a string in Zimbabwe and won that country’s Trainers’ Title for the 2014/2015 racing season.

This season has already delivered 5 stakes victories for the Hollywood bets-sponsored yard, and an even more remarkable statistic is that all five have come from their crop of 3-year-olds and older -of which they only have 14 older horses in training!

Chatting to the Sporting Post after flying into Cape Town with his Dad on Tuesday morning for the Race Coast Sales Premier Yearling Sale on Friday and Saturday, the personable Xander was still smiling after a memorable Saturday where the team’s R37 500 purchase Hazy Dazy booked her bid for SA Triple Tiara glory on 4 April when she cruised home to win the R1 250 000 Wilgerbosdrift Gr1 SA Fillies Classic.

A Legal Eagle – he qualified with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at North-West University in Potchefstroom back in 2019 – Xander admits that his heart was somewhere between his throat and his impeccably shiny shoes at the 300m, when Hazy Dazy appeared to be swallowed up by faster-finishers, after leading the stampede.

“Wasn’t that just amazing. She looked dead and buried. Trent (Mayhew) played it down afterwards, suggesting she was simply gathering her stride and having a breather. It all looks so beautifully scripted afterwards. Full marks to the filly and to young Trent. It took nerves of steel and confidence in his mount to take up the pace cudgel early, especially with so many enthusiastic and expectant owners breathing down his neck and waiting for him at the number 1 box!” laughs Xander, who adds ‘no pressure!’

It was a beautiful case of loyalty rewarded as Corne Spies and his owners’ decision to stay staunch in the Gr1 race to apprentice Trent Mayhew, who has admittedly done nothing wrong on their star filly to date, paid handsome dividends.

Mayhew, who courageously returned to the saddle last year after an injury, has only ridden just over 54 career winners at a win strike-rate of 6%, but did everything right in the big-race pressure cooker on Saturday.

Randjesfontein-resident Hazy Dazy now bids for her place in history as our sixth SA Triple Tiara winner, and her sire Act Of War’s second, after the Waterman-Wentzel’s War Of Athena in 2021.

Owners Mr & Mrs D Dasrath, Rob Macnab, Steve Poriazis, Vikash Sobaren, D Vayapuri, and the irrepressible Xander Spies, have doubtless already booked their table for the early April afternoon!

The day didn’t end for the Spies team with Hazy Dazy’s strike, and a few hours later it was their Ridgemont-bred Rafeef soldier William Robertson, who races in the same silks, who beat top-class opponents – and the doubters – with a massive effort from an insider draw under top weight to register an extraordinary 17th career victory, digging deep late to record his second win in the R300 000 TAB Gr2 JJ The Jet Plane Stakes.

The Spies team has followed the same trajectory as their 2025 programme with William Robertson, who now looks very ready to defend his Gr1 Computaform Sprint crown on 4 April.

Raced in a partnership by Rob Macnab (who celebrated his first Turffontein double in a lifetime of racing), Keegan Govender, Xander Spies, Corne Spies Racing (Pty) Ltd & Jannie de Lange’s Waste Glass Recovery (Pty) Ltd, William Robertson is by a former Computaform Sprint winner in the fabulous Rafeef (Redoute’s Choice), out of the thrice-winning Trippi mare, Massachusetts.

William Robertson was born at Ridgemont in the beautiful Robertson Valley and was seemingly named after Dr William Robertson, the Scottish minister after whom the delightful town, established in 1852, is named.

Xander Spies is a young man of unquestionable talents and he has rolled his sleeves up, currently serving as the youngest ever Chairman of the Racehorse Owners Association, a representative body for owners, with strong representation in the Highveld and Eastern Cape.

He also serves on the NHRA Rules Committee as the owner representative.

These roles have required judgment, diplomacy, credibility, and the ability to engage constructively on matters affecting owners, governance, integrity, and the long-term sustainability of the sport. His input often means fresh perspectives and the introduction of innovative strategies aimed at rejuvenating the sport for future generations.

An important factor, is that he adds plenty of value in his current office roles as his foundational experience was grounded in the operational side of racing.

While he always had his sights set on a legal qualification, Xander was involved with Spies Racing since the age of sixteen and over time has taken on substantial responsibility for ownership acquisition, owner engagement, and the broader commercial positioning of the stable.

“I have been very fortunate. As an owner, I have also been associated with four Grade 1 victories, which has deepened my appreciation for the standards and execution required to compete at the highest level,” he adds.

“My heart and soul is in this great game. I have dreams and ambitions to get more involved. Nothing beats horses and people. And that’s simply what it is all about.

One unforgettable day!

There were a few chuckles in Racing Land and some quiet mockery when Xander Spies took the microphone from interviewer Neil Andrews on 29 November, after Hazy Dazy had won the Grade 2 Ducat Africa Fillies Mile on Summer Cup Day.

Xander predicted, confidently: "This horse will go and win the Triple Tiara. Watch her. She will win and win and win and win. Keep on following her!"

Two-and-a-half-months later, Hazy Dazy has done justice to Xander's words, in near prophetic fashion - winning twice more from as many subsequent starts, with the Tiara now within grasping distance.

Xander wrote on Facebook: "Some days in racing feel almost unreal. Yesterday (Classic Day at Turffontein) was one of them. Hazy Dazy stormed home to win the SA Fillies Classic, taking the second leg of the Triple Tiara after already conquering the Guineas. Watching her confirm that class on the big stage was something special.

"Then William Robertson stepped up and defended his title in the Grade 3 JJ The Jet Plane Stakes, showing once again the heart and toughness that make him such a warrior.

"Two big race victories. Two incredible horses. One unforgettable day to be part of this game!"

17 wins - and 'William' lands another Graded contest

Hollywoodbets-sponsored Corne Spies Racing Team and their 7yo Rafeef gelding William Robertson overcame the odds and registered the 17th win of an illustrious career, when he dug deep late to record his second win in the R300 000 TAB Gr2 JJ The Jet Plane Stakes, which brought the feature curtain down on the major day at Turffontein on Saturday.

This concluded a red-letter Classic Day for the Spies stable, who had earlier captured the Grade 1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic with Hazy Dazy.

Ryan Munger marked his third winner of the afternoon – his seventh on the Ridgemont-bred gelding. Racing from an inside gate on sticky ground under top weight, the speed soldier gallantly made ground gradually down the inside and then got the measure of Taxi To The Moon (5-1) by 0,40 lengths to register 57,04 secs for the 1000m.

The Spies team has followed the same trajectory as their 2025 programme with William Robertson, who now looks very ready to defend his Gr1 Computaform Sprint crown on 4 April.

Corne Spies was understandably emotional after the race and said: "To have William Robertson win this race for a second time - a race named after one of the greatest SA sprinters of all time - is just so special. You have to have been in racing for a long time to understand the gravity of it. To be competing at this this level at his age is just extraordinary. You don't see this every day. Thanks to his owners and supporters who are here on track. This has been a great day for us. God willing we can win the Computaform Sprint again."

Munger said: "I could not believe William Robertson was 14-1 today, he's a basically one of the best sprinters in the country. What a win and what a horse, I just love riding him. From about the 300m mark I knew it was race over."

Hazy Dazy, a filly almost given away at a dispersal sale for R37,500, took her first step on the long and winding road to the dream of SA Triple Tiara glory when she won the R750 000 Wilgerbosdrift Gr2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas at a sweltering Turffontein on Saturday.

The day marked the launch of the Championships 2026, comprising the Triple Crown and Triple Tiara series and culminates in the Championship Finale on Saturday, 25 April.

Starting at 10-1, Hazy Dazy benefitted from a good ride by apprentice jockey Trent Mayhew to beat Charge It under by 2,10 lengths in a time of 97,44 seconds for the mile.

Mayhew commented: “Her wide draw was a bit tricky by she pings the gates so I wasn’t too worried. She got into a nice position and I could ride her patiently. She tried to hang, but I straightened he and she took off like a bullet!”

Mayhew said that, with Hazy Dazy having won over 2000m, he doesn’t foresee any problems for the next two legs of the Triple Tiara – the SA Classic (1800m) and the Oaks (2450m).

Corne Spies congratulated Mayhew and said: “Trent rides her to perfection every time. He is very dedicated and does a lot of hard work for the stable.”

Corne thanked Hazy Dazy’s partnership of owners – Rob Macnab, Stergio Poriazis, Xander Spies, Vikash Sobaren, Dhiresh and Chantelle Dasrath and Diveshen Vauapuri. “It’s blessing for any trainer to have group of staunch and supportive owners like these. They put their trust in me when she came up for sale as a yearling at the David Makins dispersal sale.”

Corne said that Hazy Dazy had improved ‘many-fold’ since her last win and that he would’ve been supremely confident of winning if she’d been better drawn. “I hope we’ll stand here again (after the other two legs),” he enthused.

Owner Rob Macnab certainly believes that Hazy Dazy will win the Triple Crown. He said he’d had a ‘tickle’ with a bookmaker and received odds of 120-1. Macnab, and her growing base of fans, will be shouting hard!

She was bred by the late David Makins and is by Act Of War out of Rabbedoe, who was also trained by Corne, and Grade 2 placed. Act Of War, pf course, sired the 2021 Triple Tiara winner, War Of Athena.

Seven-year-old William Robertson is the very definition of a turf warrior. He gives his everything, time and again, and was rewarded with his 16th career victory in Sunday's African Holly Stakes over 1100m at Hollywoodbets Scottsville.

With this victory, he once more underlined why he is held in such affection by those closest to him and by racing fans alike. Tough, honest and relentlessly competitive, he has carried the flag with distinction in the sprinting ranks. Horses like William Robertson don’t just win races; they earn respect, loyalty and admiration, and in doing so secure their place as true crowd favourites and sprinting legends of their era.

"We love each other, he's never run a bad race for me. I'm so glad he's back," enthused jockey Ryan Munger. "You have to hurry him up a bit, early, but he is deadly when he finds his cruising speed. He is not a 16-time winner by accident!"

Elegantrix bags Swallow Stakes; Zoombomber surprises

Canada-based SAJA graduate Ryan Munger rode a well-judged race to bag his first feature success on his current busman’s holiday when he stuck to his station down the inside to win the R225 000 Betway Listed Swallow Stakes on the Corne Spies-trained Elegantrix at the Vaal on Saturday, 17 January.

The fixture was moved from the Turffontein Standside early in the week, and produced some competitive racing.

In a fascinating visual spectacle, Gavin Lerena, who jets out to the USA on Monday to partner One Stripe in the Pegasus Invitational at Gulfstream Park, kept the previously unbeaten Rifle Queen hard up the outside, while the balance raced down the inside.

Right into the final 200m, Rifle Queen flashed her oodles of pace and dug deep all on her own.

But Munger had timed it perfectly, and despite dispensing wasted nervous energy giving the handlers a hard time before going into the gates, Elegantrix (33-10) broke her eight month drought when drawing away to beat the gallant ‘loner’ and tote favourite Rifle Queen (7-2) by 1,50 lengths in a time of 68,09 secs for the straight 1200m.

Munger said: "I thought her worst form was good enough to be competitive today. Maybe she didn't like the sticky going last time. She produced the goods!"

Xander Spies commented: "It's a lovely feeling when you have confidence and your horse produces. Thanks to the owners who have stuck by Elegantrix, through good and bad. Thanks also to our sponsors, Hollywoodbets and Winning Form."

The stable struck again in Race 10, a wide open lower division handicap over 1200m, with Zoombomber (Lancaster Bomber), who produced a storming finish to get up on the line. He was beaten a short head a Greyville earlier this week.

Joy all round as we enter the New Year with a winner

The handsome chestnut Gr1 Gold Medallion Sprint winner Chimichuri Run, who stands at Bruce Le Roux and Tinus Gericke’s Blue Sky Thoroughbreds in Mooi River, marked his first winner when his Corne Spies-trained son Spirit Of Gabz blitzed home to win a Juvenile Plate run over 1000m at Turffontein on Sunday.

A R275 000 purchase from the Blue Sky Thoroughbreds draft by Corne Spies Racing on the 2025 KZN Yearling Sale, Spirit Of Gabz strode out freely in front in a four-horse field, before staving off late challenges by the 9-10 favourite Gimme A Vodka and Parayersandpromises (33-10) to clock 58,49 secs and win his fourth start in the hands of Ryan Munger.

Corne said: “I think Chimichuri Run has a bright future, as a Grade 1 winning son of Trippi. This won’t be his last winner.”

The winner is out of the one-time winning Judpot mare, Gemstone Glamour and was a first winner for Mr Doubt and Mrs Selina Sibanda, who race him in partnership with Messrs Chris Brown, Rob Macnab, Stergio Poriazis, Akshay Singh, Xander Spies, Vishal Mahabeer, Ajish R Asaram, Lenny Pillay, Jay Soobiah and Pieter Viljoen.

Corne added: “It is great to train a first winner for Doubt and Selina, who are originally from Zimbabwe and now live in the UK. Their daughter Gabi also loves horses. Thanks to all the partners for taking a chance on a first-time sire with us.”

Munger said: “There were first timers around us and I decided to use my mount’s experience to my advantage. Spirit of Gabz jumped, showed good speed. He was idling in front. Nothing was challenging him. I knew, from the 500, that I could just let him down and he’d give, all the way to the line.”

Four wins from six runs

Hazy Dazy was easy to back before the start of the Grade 3 Ducat Africa Fillies Mile on Betway Summer Cup Day at Turffontein - the result of a single unplaced run at the Vaal recently. But she rewarded her staunch followers with a sparkling win under Trent Mayhew.

She was beaten under two lengths when favourite in a handicap at the Vaal a week prior to the race, and Mayhew explained: "There was a lightning delay and she just didn't enjoy standing around for an hour."

Hazy Dazy was a little fresh going down to the start, again, but Mayhew said she relaxed and settled down at the pens before producing her by now familiar long, relaxed strides to race to a commanding win.

Having won over 1500, 1600m and 2000m already, and with black type to her name, Hazy Dazy has now put up her hand as a potential 2026 Triple Tiara contender and Corne Spies confirmed that the grand prize for fillies is now on her radar.

"What a way to close off a testing day and well done to Trent, he lost his apprentice's claim today in a race he couldn't claim. He is going places. Hopefully Hazy Dazy can get to the Oaks, I think there is a lot more to come from here."

Hazy Dazy is owned by the partnership of Rob Macnab, Stergio Poriazis, Xander Spies, Vikash Sobaren, Dhiresh and Chantelle Dasrath and Diveshen Vauapuri. She was bred by the late David Makins from Act Of War out of Rabbedoe, and purchased for only R37,000.

Corne said: "This was even more sentimental because she was bred by the late Mr Makins, who supported our stable for decades."

Shorter trip, tongue tie did the trick

Sargent Soqrat has been a somewhat tricky customer, he's needed things to go his way - and jockey Kabelo Matsunyane timed his run perfectly to keep the gelding going for a narrow win in a Maiden Plate over 1400m at Turffontein on 13 November.

Sargent Soqrat started at long odds, but his earlier form shows good runs to decent three-year-olds including Chronicle King, Golden Warrior and Copper Eagle. The handicapper thought he was as good as a Mr80 just a few months ago.

"He's a horse that always works well, but we tried him over ground and that didn't suit him, so we brought him back to 1400m. We've also added a tongue tie for his last few starts. Thank you to the owners who have been patient with him," said Francois Naude, assistant trainer.

"He showed a nice turn of foot, but he was looking for the line the last 50m," said Kabelo, who made his move at the 250m and held off a flying late challenge from Power Of Pearls.

Sargent Soqrat was a first winner for Darrell Bailie, a member of a partnership that also includes Hansie Schutte, Ashveer Harilall, Deena Reddy, Xander Spies, Rob Macnab and Jannie de Lange's Waste Glass Recovery.

Three weeks, three wins!

Hazy Dazy completed a hat-trick of wins in as many weeks. She's improved with every run, winning easier with every step up in class, and looks a decent sort in the making.

Her latest win came in a MR76 Handicap over 2000m at Turffontein on Sunday, 26 October, and apprentice Trent once again impressed with a good ride.

Trent said: "They went a good clip and I was able to let her roll. She was still green, but has improved and she won well. If she carries on like this she'll be something to watch!"

Corne Spies agreed that Hazy Dazy could be developing into a proper filly and said: "One is always worried about what could go wrong, but she enjoyed the distance and we could have a nice classic filly on our hands. Well done to Trent, he puts in the hours and has a good work ethic."

African Pride looks destined for the top

African Pride took a significant jump in class in a Graduation Plate over 1000m at the Vaal on Tuesday, 14 October. He won with a minimum amount of fuss, and stopped the clock in 55,78s, just outside of the course record.

Apprentice Trent Mayhew had African Pride galloping in his hands, and on the bit, and he said: "He pinged the gates and he was gone. He knew what he had to do. He was a lot more forward today. He is a very nice horse, I think we can get excited about him."

Corne Spies looked understandably very chuffed with African Pride, another huge son of Rafeef who is showing the same early signs as his stablemate, William Robertson, who shares the same sire. "He's a top horse going the right way, he should go right to the top. He is one people can follow. A big thank you to his owners, the I Spy Syndicate. I am sure the syndicate nominee Chris Brown and his merry mates are enjoying this, the pubs in the UK must be buzzing!"

African Pride was raised at Paardeberg Stud and Corne said: "With Sally Bruss at the helm, we can expect good things."

Hazy Dazy made history repeat itself quickly when she came out of her Maiden to win a Handicap, completing a double alongside African Pride, like they did on 1 October.

Jockey Kabelo Matsunyane commented: "When I rode her first time out I thought she had a bit of a ability. She's definitely a smart filly."

Corne said: "This was a double-double, so to speak. I think this was the first time we've had it. She was still dumb, but she's improving. It's nice to have things come the full cirlce. We trained her dam and bought Hazy Dazy on the David Makins dispersal."

Xander Spies congratulated his partners in Hazy Dazy - Rob Macnab, Stergio Poriazis, Vikash Sobaren, Dhiresh and Chantelle Dasrath and Diveshen Vauapuri and said: "She followed up in a stronger field, a brilliant double for the stable. I think this filly will keep on progressing."

African Pride, Hazy Dazy end the dry spell

The stable's long-time staunch supporter, Rob Macnab (headline photo with African Pride), paid a rare visit to the Vaal on Tuesday, 30 September. It became one of those wonderful days at the races that stick in the memory forever, not only because it signaled a welcome return to the winner's enclosure for Spies Racing.

Macnab owns a share of both Corne Spies' winners on the day - African Pride (Race 4, 1200m) and Hazy Dazy (Race 5, 1500m), and he hasn't enjoyed winners at the Vaal in several years. "I had to put my GPS on to get to the track," he joked.

Macnab is a member of Chris Brown's 'I Spy' Syndicate who owns African Pride, a most promising horse who showed blistering pace to win his Maiden. UK-based Brown launched this syndicate with a few friends from the UK. He is a keen racing lover who has led in a few winners on his trips to South Africa.

Apprentice Trent Mayhew was also delighted to get back on the board after an injury sidelined him for a few months. "I am pleased to be winning again, everyone goes through these spells," he said. "African Pride is special, a monster of a horse, perhaps a future champ."

The stable has always held a high regard for this son of Rafeef and Mina Salaam from Northfields Stud and Corne commented: "We felt African Pride was good enough to win the Gra de 1 Gold Medallion as a Maiden, but we were on the back foot with all sorts of trouble with shins and a hoof abscess approaching the race, and he didn't jump that well. He had a proper preparation this time."

Corne added: "He's a massive horse with huge potential. He still needed the run today, was blowing a but afterwards, so he will come on in leaps and bounds. We're going to have a lot of fun with him. Chris loves his racing and I think there is a party going on in the Northern Hemisphere right now."

Trent rode a good race on Hazy Dazy (Act Of War), who was "green as grass" from the word go, ran across the track and still won. The apprentice tried to straighten her with his stick, but he put the persuader away and drove her with hands and heels over the last 100m, which made all the difference.

"I'm not sure why she ducked away like that, but she's still immature and a bit skinny, she has filling up to do and will improve," said Trent.

Corne pointed to the fact that Hazy Dazy won, 'despite herself', a good sign for the future. "I trained her dam, Rabbedoe. We bought her as a yearling from the estate of the late David Makins and she's been with us for a long time. Thanks to the owners for their patience."

William Robertson has a legion of fans from the public and the racing community. Even individuals from rival stables shouted him home to his long-overdue first Grade 1 win, the Computaform Sprint at Turffontein. His extraordinary ability aside, William Robertson has endeared himself to racegoers with his sheer size, composure and attitude. As thoroughbreds go, he is a great example of natural beauty, beautiful temperament and pure equine pride.

As Sporting Post reported, there was not a dry eye in the house!

The Ridgemont-bred Rafeef gelding William Robertson’s milestone victory in the R1 million TAB Gr1 Computaform Sprint at Turffontein on Saturday will go down as the fairytale moment of 4Racing’s 2025 Champions Day as the soldier found reserves of strength and overcame an objection to register a deserved maiden Grade 1 success.

We have said it before – Corne Spies’ evergreen 6yo equine ATM William Robertson is every owner’s dream horse and he has become a crowd favourite.

Chasing his overdue first Grade 1 trophy after running second in the same race in 2023, the 2025 TAB Gr1 Computaform Sprint looked his race to lose – and he kept us entertained on the edge of our seats, as he always does!

Tucked in early as Mover And Shaker and Gqeberha visitor Cruise Control showed the way, William Robertson (7-10) moved forward to a roar from the crowd and then found reserves to hold off a big challenge from the game filly Golden Sickle (8-1) in a time of 57,85 secs.

Enjoying a seasonal break from his new home in Canada, SAJA graduate Ryan Munger, who was aboard when William Robertson beat subsequent Grade 1 hero Dyce when shedding his maiden at the Vaal in June 2021, enjoyed an armchair ride as he prepares to pack his bags after a memorable time under the African sun.

“This was an emotional win and it was written in the stars. This was all the horse. What a training achievement! Well done to the owners. What a pleasure to ride a horse with a heart of a lion. Good luck to my colleagues who ride him in the future,” said an emotional Munger.

Corne Spies said: "He is still going strong. It is such a pleasure training him. It is a fairytale story for us. A huge thank you to our sponsors. Thanks for supporting our horse!"

Shares available in beautiful Malmoos filly!

The horses come in strange, restless tides, each promising glory—hooves drumming against our dreams of speed and triumph. This past Thursday at the Cape Racing Premier Sale, we cast nets woven from ambition and instinct, hauling in an exceptional catch: six gleaming prospects secured for a cool R3,250,000.

First came Lot 5, "Girl For Me, " from Maine Chance Stud (headline photo). Her lineage is threaded with nobility—daughter of Girl On The Run, a Black Type Mare whose victories include two emphatic Group 3 wins. (By the way, a whispered aside: shares remain available in this regal filly, should you hunger for a slice of excellence.)

Then emerged Lot 47, "Life In Colour," from Paardeberg Stud, sired by the electrifying Malmoos and borne by Mina Salaam, herself steeped in Black Type prestige. Mina Salaam has already gifted racing history True To Life, a name etched deeply in the memory of racing devotees. And Life In Colour himself? Simply magnificent.

Barely pausing for breath, we grasped Lot 48, the beguilingly named "Trompe L'Oeil," from Varsfontein Stud, offspring of the champion Gimmethegreenlight and the formidable Mirage, a Black Type Captain Al mare. Pedigree whispers through his veins—kinship tracing back to the immortal Giacomo, conqueror of the Kentucky Derby.

The momentum carried us swiftly to Lot 134 , a Querari colt from Millstream Stud, out of Bold Nimph. She has already bestowed upon the track a Grade 1 winner, Mighty High, and his equally dazzling full sister, Gobsmacked. Our colt awaits a name fitting his regal potential.

And then, Lot 149, "Guiding Star," from Oldlands Stud, son of the indomitable champion sire Vercingetorix, and full brother to the Grade 1 hero Ambiorix—a celestial alignment in equine form.

Lastly, Lot 229, a filly by freshman sire Malmoos from Ten Einde Stud. Freshman sire or not, we've glimpsed brilliance in Malmoos—he’ll carve his legend yet, and this filly caught our eye with unmistakable promise.

Computaform Sprint is next

The R1 million Gr1 Computaform Sprint is the next target for Corne Spies’ top-class Rafeef gelding William Robertson who lumbered top weight of 62kgs when running out a convincing winner of the R300 000 TAB Gr3 JJ The Jet Plane Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday.

"If all goes well, we'll see him in the Computaform Sprint, running against more or less the same horses, and we'll be hoping he can get away from them again. He keeps getting better at six years of age," enthused Xander Spies.

Ridden by Ryan Munger, who won his maiden on William Robertson at the Vaal in June 2021, returns to Canada on 31 March - and thus probably a partner for the 6yo in the Champions Day Grade 1 contest on 29 March - William Robertson was always going superbly well in the 1000m contest.

On this showing, nobody told William Robertson that he had blown from 4’s to 10’s on the betting boards!

At the 200m marker it was race over and William Robertson (10-1) went on well to beat tote favourite Golden Sickle (33-10) by 2,25 lengths in a time of 57,32 secs.

The gelding cost R500 000 on the BSA National 2yo Sale and is a winner of 14 of his 41 starts with 16 places – he has earned R2 407 375.

"I had a chance today to lead William Robertson into the winner's enclosure," said co-owner Rob Macnab. "Keagan Govender has been leading him in, in Kwazulu-Natal. I think he will be visiting us soon!"

Expertly placed, Hierkomdiebokkie wins again

This is how Xander Spies summed up Hierkommiebokkie's win at Turffontein, 6 February:

Some horses win races. Others impose themselves on them—assert their presence, bend the track to their will, and rewrite the script before it’s even been read. Hierkommiebokkie is of the latter kind.

Yesterday at Turffontein, she didn’t merely run. She commanded. From the moment the gates snapped open, there was no pretense of competition. Just inevitability. She dictated the pace, sculpted the air around her, and owned every single stride until the finish line bowed before her in submission. A fifth career victory, and one that came with all the finality of an exclamation mark.

Of course, brilliance is rarely a solo act. Kabelo Matsunyane—cool, composed, merciless—rode like a man with an unshakable secret: He already knew how this would end. A ride as sharp as a well-placed dagger, effortless yet decisive.

Staunch patrons received a 100k bonus!

Elegantrix made an eye-catching debut at Turffontein on Saturday, 1 February, slamming her rivals by 2,75-lengths under jockey Ryan Munger. She clocked 69,07s.

Elegantrix was supported on course by most members of her colourful owning partnership, TKP Racing (Pty) Ltd (Nom: Trevelen Pillay), Rob Macnab, Yagan Nair and Stergio Poriazis, with Braam van Huysteen watching from his Cape Town base. They paid R850,000 for her at the Bloodstock SA 2024 August Two-Year-Old Sale.

Munger said: "She is beautiful, a quality filly. She has a good temperament, went down well. It's pretty simple to ride horses like this."

"It's nice to see a whole bunch of owners here to see her win like a champion. It's always stressful when babies go out for the first time. I hope that we can get more nice horses for the partnership. Thanks to them, and thanks to our team at home," said Xander Spies.

Poriazis said he was pleased to see Tobie Spies trackside and explained: "When I saw uncle Tobie here I knew that this filly wouldn't get beat. Well done to the stable and partners, we're expecting big things from this filly."

Elegantrix was bred by Marsh Shirtliff's Greenacres Trust and David Hepburn Brown at Hemel & Aarde Stud. She is a half-sister to stakes-placed filly, Elegant Ice.

The partners received a lovely R100,000 sales bonus from BSA.

12th win, and more to come

There were a few racing fans worried about William Robertson's outside draw down the Scottsville straight on Sunday, 1 December, but the big son of Rafeef won with another all-class performance, and without too much fuss.

This was William Robertson's 12th career victory and he pushed his earnings to over R2-million, a feat which Xander Spies pointed out is only achieved by 1% of horses racing in South Africa.

"He's a soldier, a special horse to train and he's done us proud so many times. What an amazing journey we've had with him," said Corne Spies. "He is still going strong at six years of age and I think he has a good few left in the tank."

Apprentice Trent Mayhew said he wanted to move in from the outside draw but that there was no room to do that effectively, so he kept a straight course. "I jumped him out and he did the rest. He quickened well."

Good opportunity to socialise with racing fans

The Racehorse Owners Association (ROA) hosted a free breakfast for owners, trainers and the public at Randjesfontein on Saturday, 24 November.

The event was hosted by Natalie Turner, CEO of the ROA, who said: “This was a lovely family morning out for all. We were able to meet some new racing fans who are interested in getting involved as owners, and they were introduced to and had a chance to meet a number of trainers and see their horses on the gallop track.

“Trainers who fully supported us with their various owners included Corne Spies, Mike de Kock, Sean Tarry, James Crawford, Paul Matchett and Alec Laird. We also had a number of prominent owners in attendance, including Arun Chadha, Adv Louis Cortez, Anton Marx, Bradley Ralph, Garth Towell, Mark Campbell, Taryn and Bryan Spong, Trevelen Pillay, Vasan Harry and others. Some jockeys and apprentices also came along as well as stakeholders from the 4R executive team, Colin Gordon, Lunde Bleni and Potlako Mophiring.”

Turner said that all 150 guests arrived. “We were delighted with the turnout and you can expect a lot more from us.”

Corne Spies commented: "This was an enjoyable morning and a chance to share ideas with patrons and fans. We look forward to similar in future."

300th winner for staunch owners

We Will Rock You posted her second win from seven starts in a MR75 Handicap over 1200m at the Vaal on 5 November. She was easy to back, but led for a long way, kept going and defied her 8-1 starting price.

We Will Rock You, ridden by Marco van Rensburg, clocked 69,21s, easing down late. This was interesting, because it was a faster time than the time set by Francene, who won a MR95 Handicap an hour earlier, in a driving finish.

Corne Spies commented: "This was a special win for us, win number 300 for Rob and Sue Macnab, who joined the stable in 2002 and have been with us through good times and low times. I hope there are more 300th wins! Also well done to Clive Murphy and Stergio Poriazis.

Jockey Marco van Rensburg said he expected a good run. "Her last run was fantastic, she came flying and showed us she had the ability."

We Will Rock You is a three-year-old filly by Oratorio from Jets-A-Blazing, by Jet Master. She was bred by Patricia Devine Investments.

Big William gives star Lucky Lad a game beating

Fighting spirit in a close finish!

The Corne Spies-trained Ridgemont-bred Rafeef soldier William Robertson produced a gutsy performance under a superbly judged ride by Apprentice Trent Mayhew to beat Sean Tarry’s course-and-distance specialist Lucky Lad in a R175 000 Pinnacle Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday, reports SPORTING POST.

The 4yo Lucky Lad is one of the most popular horses around and was having his first run this season after what many considered to be an unlucky second-placed effort behind Surjay in the Gr1 Mercury Sprint.

For jockey Craig Zackey it was something of a pressure moment as he took over from Richard Fourie, the only other jockey to have partnered the Varsfontein-bred star, at what was his thirteenth start.

Fourie won 7 races, including two Gr1’s, two Gr2’s and a Gr3 on Lucky Lad.

While the field scratched down to six runners, there was plenty of faith in Lucky Lad making a winning return after a 12 weeks absence over a course and distance he was unbeaten on – and he was a popular Pick 6 banker for many.

Riding the son of Gimmethegreenlight for the first time, Craig Zackey had Lucky Lad closer to the action in midfield in the small field, and he looked dangerous going into the 250m marker.

But fairytale comebacks don’t happen every day, as William Robertson (4-1) benefitted from superior match fitness and the 2,5kg claim of Trent Mayhew, who did everything right, to hold off the courageous Lucky Lad, who had drifted from 6-10 before 11-10 and went down by 0,20 lengths. William Robertson clocked 68,61 for the 1160m.

Zoombomber stormed to victory at 8/1 on 16 October, absolutely loving the Polytrack at Greyville and making the most of his perfect draw. With an exceptional ride from Marco Van Rensburg, this was a performance to remember. He plugged away gamely when challenged over the last 200m.

Xander Spies commented: "The real stars are our amazing GLR subscribers! A special shout-out to Warren and Vishal, who were there on course to cheer him on. Betway praised for massive contribution

4Racing has announce a substantial increase in stakes for the Highveld racing season, with an overall rise of just over 10%. This adjustment raises the total stakes pot for the period to over R90 million, solidifying 4Racing’s position as the premier operator.

Gabriel Soma, Head of Racing Operations, stated, “This increase is another extremely positive development for all stakeholders and highlights the direction in which 4Racing is headed. We have built upon the strong foundations established in recent years. While significant increases were allocated to feature races last season (those stakes remain), we are thrilled to share that the majority of this increase will benefit all other races, with notable boosts across each division. Alongside various incentives, we are looking forward to a remarkable season.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our sponsors, with a special acknowledgment to Betway, which has significantly elevated the Betway Summer Cup to an impressive R6 million, making it the richest race on the continent. Rock Of Bismantova: 1200 is his game!

Rock Of Bismantova is by Futura and was considered to be one that will come into his own over more ground, but, brought back to 1200m, he won a strong form race at the Vaal on 24 September, leading all the way down the straight.

Jockey Chase Maujean said: "Fransie (Naude) told me to go easy on the stick as Rock Of Bismantova doesn't like it. He was right. I was a bit worried over the last 50m, but he quickened well and then kept going."

Corne commented: "Looks like we had it wrong with Rock Of Bismantova. He's been frustrating over further, but enjoyed the 1200m today and beat what looked like a strong field. We'll keep him over 1200m - 1400m, and I think we'll have more fun with hime. He has matured well, has shown good work this last month."

Xander Spies wrote on Facebook: "What a thrilling performance by Rock of Bismantova! This incredible horse secured his third victory yesterday, dominating a competitive 1200m field with style and grace. We couldn't be prouder of his performance and the fantastic teamwork behind this success. A special shoutout to jockey Chase Maujean for an outstanding ride, guiding Rock of Bismantova to victory. Spies team is excited about August Sale buys

Lot 332: Rafeef filly.

Corne Spies secured seven lots at the recent Bloodstock SA Two-Year-Old Sale and said: “We had a terrific sale, things just fell into place and our bids landed, we got what we wanted.” Spies, his father Tobie and son Xander use a points system to select potential purchases and, with consistent success, they’ve never changed or tweaked their methods. They have shares available in Lot 224, a Sandown-bred colt by Soqrat and Lot 332, a Rafeef filly from Winterbach Stud.

Spies said: “The Soqrat colt (headline photoi) is a super specimen. His coat was all hairy and I thought we’d buy him for a small amount of money, but others obviously saw his potential and he went for R325,000. Still, it was money well spent, and I think he won’t take long in coming to hand. He’s a half-brother to Mike de Kock’s runners Arividicio and Beamonesque. The Rafeef filly is a big, like our William Robertson, with lots of scope. She is a half-sister to Val D’Orcia, who was very fast and won the Grade 2 Post Merchants.”

A good ending to 2023/4 season

We want to make 2024/5 spectacular for patrons!

The Spies Racing team concluded the 2023/4 season with a double, and crowned a strong last few months to end the term on 26 winners.

Newcomer Kings Again (One World) and Rock Of Bismantova (Future) won on the last Gauteng meeting of the season at the Vaal and Corne said "We had a nice few winter months to end the season and we are happy with the results achieved from a string that averaged less than 40 horses. We are on the up again, Xander's Green Lightning concept is doing well, gaining traction and we look forward to the 2024/5 season."

Rock Of Bismantova, well-placed to win.

Corne said that he was looking forward to the auction sales, including the forthcoming August Sale at the TBA Complex.

"This is traditionally a special time of year when we select new young horses at the various sales coming up, including the August Sale at the TBA complex. We replace the runners moving on with new ones, and we'd like to boost our numbers this year to around 60 horses so we can be more competitive."

The stable is renowned for excellent value buys over many decades, with a long list of top level performers bought at affordable prices and many new and existing owners getting a bite at the cherry.

"We use a specific and tried points system to select yearlings and two-year-olds and we've managed to find a few top runners without fail, every year. We'll be hoping to buy another Van Halen, or a War Horse or a Nourbese or a William Robertson. Hierkommiebokkie stepped up in class and distance at Turffontein on Thursday, 11 July, and was even more impressive over 1450m than she was when winning her Highveld debut over 1200m recently.

Hierkommiebokkie took control of the race early, galloped her rivals into the ground and had jockey Kabelo Matsunyane looking over his shoulder for a challenge, 150m out. She won by 2.75-lengths from Duenna.

"She's nicely poised for the forthcoming feature season. A big thank you to Mayesh Chetty and Braam van Huyssteen for sending her to us," said Corne.

Matsunyane said: "I think she will stay a mile. She races with confidence. When she got to the front, she pricked her ears and extended."

Hierkommiebokkie is a four-year-old filly by Master of My Fate from Ooh La Var, by Var, bred by Chetty. She has won four of 15 starts, with three places.

The Corne Spies stable enjoyed a wonderfully successful Durban July courtesy of Rock Of Bismantova and Golden Aspen (Vaal, Thursday 4 July) and Chocolate Soldier (HWB Greyville on Saturday, 6 July).

Rock Of Bismantova (Futura) was considered to have needed the run after a break, but he got away from his opposition in a Work Riders Plate and kept going well under Tsepiso Motsoela. "I knew I had to wait a bit longer, but Rock Of Bismantova pinged the gates and I dropped my stick. I knew someone was going to chase us. He looked magnificent, my heart was pumping," said Motsoela.

Rock Of Bismantova races for Sitha Govender, Chris Brown and stable stalwart Rob Macnab, who celebrated his birthday on the day.

Golden Aspen (Pomodoro) won Race 6 over 1200m under a well-judged ride from Marco van Rensburg. This was her ninth career win, amazing progress in her fifth year from a mare who took 12 runs to win her Maiden, and testimony to the care and expertise she has been handled with. Golden Aspen has now earned over R700,000 for Gavin Jooste, Xander Spies and Spies Racing.

One can safely argue that Chocolate Soldier's connections looked overjoyed at the glittering Durban July ! (JC Photos).

Chocolate Soldier (One World) is maturing with every start, he is far more sensible now than he was just a few months ago, and ready to fulfill his potential. He beat a field of competitive runners in a handicap on the Polytrack, once again professionally handled by Van Rensburg.

On course were owners Rob Macnab, Sergio Poriazis and Jose Suares, with other partners Chris Brown (UK) and Izak Bergh watching from home.

"We've got his mouth right with the right bit, he has a fantastic future. His game is 1000m!"

He is getting the hang of it now!

Chocolate Soldier's blistering pace is his biggest attribute and he was always going to be hard to beat on the inside track at Turffontein, and from a good draw. He won Race 7 over 1000m on Saturday, 22 June, from pillar to post, putting 4.25 lengths and more between himself and older horses in a handicap, and in a time of 57, 91s.

He's only two, still learning and with his youthful habit of tearing away has given Corne Spies sleepless nights. But he is starting to put it together and was at his most sensible so far taking the turn, settling better in the home run and kicking away professionally and with a long stride.

"I was a passenger today, Chocolate Soldier did all the work. He kicked well and gave me a nice feel," said jockey Kabelo Matsunyane.

"He's learning about it now and there could be bigger things for him," said Corne, who has a July Day race in mind for this promising son of sire sensation, One World.

There was confidence from the yard in Chocolate Soldier and his owners, who represent the proverbial 'United Nations', were trackside to witness the win. They included UK-based Chris Brown as well as Jose Suares, who flew in from Vietnam with his family. Stalwart Rob Macnab seldom misses a beat, Izak Bergh was on course too and Sergio Poriazis was there in spirit - he couldn't make it on the day.

Hierkommiebokkie slams her rivals

Hierkommiebokkie stepped confidently into her Highveld debut at Turffontein on Thursday, 6 June, and never looked like losing a 1200m Handicap for fillies and mares.

She took up the running from the word go, ran her rivals dizzy and extended near the end of the race to win by 3,40-lengths.

Hierkommiebokkie joined the stable from Cape Town two months ago, settled in well and showed that she is destined for better with this eye-catching win under a big weight.

Corne commented: "Thanks to Braam and Bianca van Huyssteen and her breeder Mayesh Chetty for sending her to us. It's been a while since we've saddled a winner for Braam. "This filly won very well and we're impressed, let's hope we can catch some bigger fish from here."

Jockey Kabelo Matsunyane said: "She has solid Cape form and she's a front-running filly. We just wanted her to relax, but she was comfortable and in motion, she did it easy and hit the line strong."

Hierkommiebokkie is a four-year-old by Master Of My Fate out of Oo La Var, by VAR.

Golden Aspen has matured well

Golden Aspen (Pomodoro), won the eighth race of her career, taking a MR66 Handicap at the Vaal on Thurdsday, 28 May. She's delighted owners Coenie Strydom, Jannie de Lange and Spies racing with her courage during her career and, at five, she's probably not done yet. She's improved with maturity and even off her new 75 merit rating she'll have a chance of winning for a ninth time.

Corne Spies said: "Marco van Rensburg knows her well, she needs a patient ride because she has a short run-in. He knows how to ride her. Thanks to him and her owners."

Van Rensburg, who has ridden Golden Aspen 33 times for six wins, said: "She's a quirky girl, you have to be kind with her. She's given me uphill, but she's been good to me. When you're nice to her she gets going at the end of her races and gives you her best."

The kind of filly we'd all like to own!

Golden Aspen started her career in March 2021 and took 13 runs to win her Maiden, but she's won another six races since - the latest a 1200m Handicap success at the Vaal on 7 May.

Golden Aspen's career record now shows 67 runs for seven wins and 27 places, with R615,000 banked - testimony to expert placing by Corne Spies. She's the kind of filly everyone wants to own, one that delivers joy and fun while earning her way, and whose potential is carefully developed in accordance with ability shown. She's been versatile, winning from 1200m to 1500m and she's earned at four racecourses.

Bringing racing to the man in the street

Trainer Corne Spies’ and his son Xander have come up with a groundbreaking new way of getting involved in horseracing through a monthly subscription, reports TURF TALK.

Green Lightning Racing is intended to make it easier and more affordable for fans to be immediately involved, enabling them to encounter what the “ownership experience” is in the sport of horse racing.

Xander, who is a qualified lawyer and current director of the Racehorse Owners Association, can’t shake off his love for horseracing and explained, “Young people are interested in horseracing, but just don’t know how to access it and are unsure how to partake in it. So what I generally do is I invite a bunch of friends and show them what racing is about, teach them how to have a bet, teach them how to read form, take them down to the track to hear the horses running on the ground not far away, it’s an experience in itself and it kind of gets people hooked to the extent that they constantly asking me when are we going racing again.

"So I believe if you start at grass roots level one can really rebuild and rejuvenate racing to a certain extent, but it is a multi-faceted effort and it needs to come from every part of the industry and this is one of the reasons I took on the opportunity to formulate this new concept. We began thinking how can we make racing more accessible to the general racing public, to people who are passionate about horses, who enjoy watching horses and not only enjoy the betting side, but actually follow the horses as if they are sports stars and the jockeys as well to a certain extent. In SA’s past we have had horses like Wolf Power, Igugu, Horse Chestnut … people remember those horse’s names with reverence and fondness.

"So we thought why don’t we start an idea that is based on a sports team and that is where the logo we use comes from, it borrows from American sports teams as it stands out and becomes recognisable. So we then formed a concept called Green Lightning whereby we want to give involvement to the racing public in a way that is new and fresh and that hasn’t been tested before.”

Corne said the concept had similarities to the huge syndicates in Australia and America etc that gave an an opportunity to those who could not normally afford it to be able to experience racing from an insider point of view.

Circle Of Grace (Potala Palace) posted his third career win with a game run over 1900m at Greyville on 3 April - on a day when four out of five stable runners earned a stake.

This filly could win more races

We Will Rock you didn't jump from the pens the way her fans hoped she would., but she made up ground quickly and took command of a Maiden Plate over 1200m at Scottsville on Easter Monday. She beat older fillies, running through all the way.

Jockey Marco van Rensburg said: "She was a bit nervous out of the pens but she recovered quickly. I didn't want to wait too long and risk getting trapped behind horses."

Corne Spies commented: "She didn't know where she was first time out but ran on well. She came through today's race very nicely, she can only improve from here and we hope to seen more of her.

Eu approves SA's bloodstock exports

Big news for South African racing and breeding!

South African Equine Health and Protocols (SAEHP) has announced an important and exciting update regarding the re-opening of European Union (EU) export markets to the various equine disciplines in South Africa.

SAEHP, in conjunction with the South African Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD), advises that DALRRD has received official notification that the reinstatement of direct exports of registered equines from South Africa to the EU has been approved.

This official notification followed a meeting of the EU Commission Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed – Controls and Import Conditions Section whereby the EU Member States endorsed the Commission’s proposal for an amendment to Annex IV of the Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/404.

This amendment places South Africa’s African Horse Sickness (AHS) free zone back on the Annex IV list as an authorised zone within South Africa from which registered equines are authorised for direct entry into the EU following the required in-country pre-export quarantine period.

It is 13 years since South Africa was last able to export registered equines directly to the EU. SAEHP was formed in 2018 and has been working with the South African Government for the past six years to achieve this export milestone. It has taken longer than originally anticipated, with the main reason being that Covid affected the first official EU audit timing, scheduled for 2020, but with the audit rescheduled and carried out in 2022 and subsequent communications between DALRRD and the EU authorities, the reinstatement of direct EU equine exports has now been granted. The most challenging hurdle has now been surpassed, and the implementation of exports will be straightforward.

The workstreams to achieve this success have been long and complex.

SAEHP would like to sincerely thank the South African Government, DALRRD, the Western Cape Veterinary Services, SAEHP’s various funders in South Africa, The Hong Kong Jockey Club, the National Horseracing Authority (NHA), the Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Quarantine Station, the Thoroughbred Breeders Association as well as all the participants in the audit process, the laboratories, trainers, stud farms, registering authorities (NHA, Stud Book, and South African Equestrian Federation), stop over quarantine facilities and last but not least the SAEHP board members, management and staff for together achieving this important outcome.

This is a very positive development for both the South African thoroughbred racing industry as well as for other equine disciplines in the country and the re-opening of normal trade will have many benefits, including in time the creation of further jobs in this employment intensive industry.

The reinstatement of direct exports to the EU may lead to other export markets deciding to invest in South African horses, either by exporting via the EU or exporting directly from South Africa.

This will lead to greater interest in South African yearlings and horses in training of all equine disciplines, benefiting breeders and owners who choose to either sell to overseas buyers or compete internationally.

Dr Mpho Maja, Director Animal Health at DALRRD, said “I am very pleased with the outcome; this shows that when we work together, we can achieve what is thought to be impossible. I send my gratitude to the equine industry and provincial veterinary services for the support provided in ensuring compliance to the requirements. I look forward to our horses flying the flag internationally and making us all proud.”

David Abery, Chairman of SAEHP, said “This is very exciting news, and thank you to everyone involved in making it happen. It is anticipated that this opening up of direct EU exports will, over time, give a significant boost to not just the South African thoroughbred racing and breeding industry, but also to the other equine disciplines, all of which have been somewhat internationally isolated for many years.

“It is vital that what has now been achieved is maintained, and we look forward to working with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the functions of SAEHP are well funded and developed as required, so that we can support industry in maximising the value which flows from an efficient and strong horse export system.”

This EU amendment will come into effect after publication in the Official Journal of the European Union which is expected to occur shortly. SAEHP will advise when this publication has been made.

The pre-export quarantine period will take place at the existing Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Quarantine Station, exports will be then able to take place from the AHS free zone in Cape Town directly to the EU.

Breath-taking stuff!

Corne Spies and his team enjoyed a thrilling afternoon at Greyville on Wednesday, 14 March, with three winners from four runners at the meeting.

Rachel Venniker booted home Maiden Vathomvlaffie in the opener, he won well, enjoyed the Polytrack. Marco van Rensburg piloted Circle Of Grace home, a horse that's always showed he was capable of multiple wins, and then he rode a good race on the talented Wyzeact, who fought hard to beat Sleek As Silk in a driving finish to Race 7.

Corne thanked Hollywoodbets for their support, and also the host of owners succesful at the meeting, including:

-Jose Soares and Robbie Gertenbach, who enjoyed their first double ever at a single meeting; and the Wyzeact partnership (Macnab, Poriazis, Dashrath and Adv. Schutte), lucky as owners together with others like William Robertson.

This was also a special day as it was the birthday of Corne's wife Nina. Greyville has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for the Spies stable.

Cian The Conqueror wins at Vaal

Cian The Conqueror started his career on a high note with a win over highly regarded Munchkin in 2022, but has only achieved places since. With a lower merit rating he got back into the winner's circle after a handicap over 1200m at the Vaal on 7 March, beating a field of hard knockers.

Cian The Conqueror has always packed a bit of class and he's been unlucky too, so perhaps this boost of confidence will do him the world of good. He quickened really well when he saw daylight in a big field.

Said Van Rensburg: "He's a bit fussy, but he has a good groom who looks after him. We've worked hard on him, he won a very good race today."

Cian The Conqueror races for Gavin Jooste. Bred by Boland Stud, he is by William Longsword out of a mare by Dynasty.

Dynamic youngster wants to make a difference

Jacqueline Sparke and Xander Spies have joined the Board of the Racehorse Owners Association (ROA) in order to fill the vacancy created by the Chairman’s resignation and that of Kevin Sommerville, who departed in March 2023.

Jackie Sparke is a qualified Chartered Accountant (SA) and boasts over 33 years of experience in finance and tax. Most recently, she was the Finance Director for Mary Oppenheimer Daughters until December 2021 and retired in June 2023.

She served as a director of numerous family companies and had been with E Oppenheimer & Son (Pty) Ltd from September 2003 until 30 June 2018, when her employment contract was transferred to Mary Oppenheimer Daughters (Pty) Ltd. She was responsible for all the financial and tax affairs of over 60 entities including the services company and all other related companies, trusts and individual family members.

A well-known face in the winner’s circle and a popular owner and son of veteran Corne Spies, Xander Spies is a dynamic young figure in the South African horseracing landscape, bringing a fresh perspective and innovative strategies aimed at rejuvenating the sport for future generations.

As a qualified attorney with a deep-rooted legacy in racing, Xander represents the culmination of three generations of passion and expertise in the industry.

His grandfather, Tobie Spies, a revered trainer, laid the foundation, while his father, Corné Spies, continues to be a luminary in the field as a celebrated trainer.

Yardmaster established major careers

As we gear up for tomorrow's 2024 King's Plate, let me take you back to a significant moment in the Spies Racing legacy. It's about a horse named Yardmaster, whose story is nothing short of extraordinary.

Back in the day, in 1988, Tobie Spies, a name that has now become synonymous with top-tier horse training, came across Yardmaster. This horse was known for being a bit of a handful, so much so that his original trainer, Jean Heming, found him too difficult to saddle and quite rough around the edges. But Tobie, seeing something special in him, decided to take a chance.

Yardmaster was then part of Tobie's training operations at the Vaal Training Yard. Despite his challenging nature, Tobie saw potential in this spirited horse and took him all the way to Cape Town for the prestigious Queen's Plate race. The odds were stacked against him at 20/1, suggesting that not many believed this underdog would make it big. But Yardmaster was about to turn the tables.

In a race that had everyone on the edge of their seats, Yardmaster, ridden by the now-legendary jockey Pierre Strydom, charged across the finish line, clinching victory in a stunning upset. This win wasn't just a first for Yardmaster; it also marked the first Queen's Plate for both Tobie Spies and Pierre Strydom in their respective careers.

But that's not all. Yardmaster's career spanned from 1986 to 1990, and during this time, he didn’t just win races; he made a lasting impression. At the National 2-year-old sale, amidst a sea of potential champions, Rock Opera, a horse with an unassuming price tag of R80,000.00, caught the attention of Spies. Another illustrious progeny, Royal Meeting, emerged as a Grade 1 winner and currently serves as a stallion in Australia.

The Ridgemont-bred Rafeef gelding William Robertson notched up a tenth career victory for top travelling trainer Corne Spies as Mother Nature came out with all guns blazing to bring an early end to the Hollywoodbets Scottsville racemeeting on Sunday, reports SPORTING POST.

With lightning in the vicinity, hail stones half the size of golf balls were falling from the heavens – and then the rain came as the eight-horse meeting was abbreviated to just six races.

Gold Circle Racing Executive Raf Sheik said that the light was fading fast during the running of the sixth race, and this fact is illustrated by the Judge’s light, which shone brightly across the track as the 5yo William Robertson made it three wins on the trot – his last two in quick succession in the KZN Capital City.

Running horses regularly and travelling is not impossible with the right animal, and William Robertson is growing in confidence. Gavin Lerena has been aboard at all three of his recent wins.

William Robertson is by Ridgemont’s top-class sire Rafeef (Redoute’s Choice), who enjoyed a top weekend. The gelding is out of the thrice winning Trippi mare Massachusetts and cost R500 000 on the BSA National 2yo Sale.

William Robertson is now a winner of 10 races with 11 places from 31 starts for stakes of R1 799 750.

Three Strands was a 'shoe-in' for punters

"Three Strands ran them shoeless!" joked Corne Spies after seeing this photo taken by Candiese Lenferna near the finish of Race 8 at Scottsville on Sunday, 19 November.

It shows a shoe coming off the second-placed runner, Giver's Grace, and it may or may not have played a role in her defeat to our runner. It was a close finish though, Three Strands finished hard and fast. There was just a nose in it at the line, and if this was a bit of luck, then it was high time we got some for a change!

Stable double at Scottsville

In form at Scottsville: Keegan Govender, Corne Spies, Dhesan Chetty, Xander Spies.

One of the most successful travelling conditioners from the days when he was behind the wheel on the long road to Borrowdale, Flamingo Park, Fairview and even Hollywoodbets Durbanville from his Vaal home base, Hollywoodbets-sponsored Corne Spies arrived in a sweltering Pietermaritzburg on Sunday from his Randjesfontein HQ and duly delivered the best double bet of the day for happy punters.

The former Zimbabwean champion had just two runners at Hollywoodbets Scottsville and went home with a 100% strike – although the two winners were very different, and there was plenty of additional sweating for the second leg!

The talented William Robertson looked near unbeatable in the second, a 1400m Pinnacle Stakes, and the son of Rafeef duly arrived at 6-10 to win unextended and register his second win on the trot.

Gavin Lerena earned his easiest commission of the month when they held the one-eyed Bowie at bay to win easily.

The Ridgemont-bred William Robertson is by the champion farm’s top-class sire Rafeef (Redoute’s Choice) out of the thrice winning Trippi mare Massachusetts and cost R500 000 on the BSA National 2yo Sale.

The 5yo William Robertson, who owners Xander Spies and the Durban-based Govender family were on hand at the lead in, is now a winner of 9 races with 11 places from 30 starts for stakes of R1 724 750.

When taxed on a likely next step for William Robertson, Corne said there are some tough choices to make now. A Cape raid is not out of the question.

NThe second Spies winner was a lot more nerve wracking.

Easy to back at 3-1, the cucumber cool Chase Maujean had the daughter of Futura relaxed in midfield from a wide gate. Into the straight, she picked them off down the outside but found Rachel Venniker and Givers Grace in a determined mood down the inside.

In the race to the wire Three Strands got the verdict by a short head.

This was The Alchemy bred Three Strand’s second career victory. She cost R50 000 off the Cape Yearling Sale. - SPORTING POST.

Top weight, no problem!

William Robertson gave chunks of weight to most of his rivals in a Pinnacle Stakes over 1160m at Turffontein on Saturday, 4 November, but gave them a hiding under a hands-and-heels ride from Gavin Lerena. This was his eighth career win, he clocked 67,22s.

It's not easy to find races for sprinters with high merit rating and this one came along as a nice prep for what lies ahead this summer. "He just lost his confidence a bit earlier this season and when we found this race we knew it was a perfect contest for him, he holds the class record for this course and distance. He's got undeniable class," said Xander Spies, part-owner.

Lerena said: "He went down well well today, well done to the Spies stable for keeping him sound, he is a big boy. I let him go maybe 100m to early, but he got a bump and that put him back on his wrong leg. He ran a great race."

Corne Spies thanked the owners, Xander partnered with Corne Spies Racing, Rob MacNab, Keegan Govender and Jannie De Lange's Waste Glass Recovery.

"William Robertson has done us proud. It's nice to be back in the winner's box with him. He's proven to be better down the straight, but there are not many races we can go for. We'll keep our eyes open for the next suitable race," said Corne.

William Robertson is by Rafeef out of Massechusetts, raised at Ridgemont.

Two lovely runners for next season!

The imposing Wyzact is a big, strong customer, still green and very full of himself, evident in his bouncing around like a young man full of testosterone passing the winning post at the Vaal on Tuesday, 25 July. He has already been gelded and can only improve from here, which is wonderful for Corne Spies and the team, who already regard him as 'top class'!

Once all that energy is directed into focus, Wyzeact will be a force to be reckoned with next season and he is one of the special runners to have brought the stable back to form after a tough year with a few setbacks and unlucky seconds.

"When the penny drops, his owners are going to have fun with him," said jockey SManga Khumalo, who said his arms were tested by Wyzeact's strength. He's by Act Of War from Wysiwig, an excellent pedigree, and was a first winner for Bloomhill Stud. He races for Rob Macnab, Sergio Poriazis, D & C Dasrath, Adv Hansie Schutte and Corne Spies Racing.

The other winner on the board in the last week of the season was Captain Wara, a two-year-old coltg who should have won already and will go on now that he's broken the ice. He did it in style, leading from start to finish in a 1160m Maiden at Turffontein, under Khumalo. Most of the owning partnership was on track. Captain Wara races for Wayne Pillay, Anthony Seur and Warren Chetty alongside Spies Racing.

"When things go wrong, just nothing seems to go right," said Corne about the stable's erratic 2023. "But we are back, the horses are well and we're having winners again."

Khumalo rode well-judged race

Jockey S'Manga Khumalo rode an enterprising race on Whispers Of War to win a MR90 Handicap over 1600m on the Inside Track at Turffontein, Saturday 15 July. As it happened, the race was named after Spies Racing, in keeping with 4Racing's recent initiative to thank trainers for their contributions.

The race was exciting. S'Manga decided to speed up the moderate clip and sent Whispers Of War out to lead the pack at the 1200m mark, allowing him to use his stride and dictate. The favourite, Tizona, loomed ominously going through the 200m mark and drew level, but S'Manga, crouched low, kept our runner going in the drive to the line. Whispers Of War had his nose in front where it mattered.

The stable has just come through an unlucky patch with short-head defeats, horses jumping prematurely from the pens and just some bad luck in running. The connections of Tizona objected on the grounds of late interference, but the call stayed with us and perhaps that is somewhat of a good omen as we have been back among the winners lately and this kind of hard-fought win by a hard trier brings more momentum as we go into the latter part of the winter season.

Whispers Of War is a five-year-old by Time For War (AUS), and he races for Dr Sagie Naidoo.

Corne Spies said: "Well done all round, it was a pleasant surprise to win a race named in our honour. Whispers Of War has improved after gelding, he tries hard and can win again."

Impressive comeback win after rest

William Robertson showed no signs of ring-rustiness as he put his rivals to bed in a Pinnacle Stakes over 1160m at Turffontein on Sunday.

Corne Spies was worried that the imposing son of Rafeef would just be in need of the run following his rain-interrupted work programme, but he actually won with what was thought to be a measure of ease, with three-year-old classic hopefuls Quantum Theory and Prophet comprehensively beaten.

Marco van Rensburg was thankful for retaining the ride - thanking owners Rob and Sue Macnab, Keegan Govender, Jannie de Lange and Xander Spies. Asked if 'William' was the best sprinter in the country (and not forgetting he once made G1 Computaform Sprint winner Master Archie look ordinary in a Greyville sprint), Van Rensburg said: "If not the best, one of the best!"

Corne was happy to share the moment with regular stable supporter Jannie de Lange, who was on course to lead William Robertson into the winner's enclosure.

Corne said: "We'll be looking at the G2 Hawaii Stakes next, William Robertson is suited to 1400m, and then perhaps the Horse Chestnut Stakes."

He was also impressed with the good sprint produced by Prophet, another to keep an eye on!

A special Maiden win by Three Strands

Corne trained her dam, Tripple Dart

Three Strands won her Maiden at her third attempt at the Vaal on Thursday, 12 January, running on well to win by 2.25-lengths from Memorial Day.

There was a lot to like about the way Three Strands put her rivals away and while she didn't beat much, she had 15 others behind her and looks a filly that can go on to better.

Jockey Marco van Rensburg confirmed: "I was happy to lead but Memorial Day was too fast early so we settled just behind her. They didn't go that hard after that, Three Strands stayed on well and she had more to come at the line."

Corne commented: "It's a special moment for me and my team as the dam of Three Strands, Triple Dart, was also trained by us. Achieving a maiden victory is always a significant milestone for any horse and we are proud of the hard work and dedication of the entire team that led to this success. We are looking forward to seeing Three Strands' progress in the coming races."

Three Strands races for Dhesan Chetty, Suven Govender, Ronnie Naicker, Jannie De Lange's Waste Glass Recovery and Corne Spies Racing (Vikash Sobaren). She's a Philip Kahan-bred (Evergreen Stud) by Futura.

Brilliant turn of foot from off the pace

Marco van Rensburg has been full of smiles since riding for our stable - we've had a host of winners with him in the last few months - but his smile was especially big after Flowerbomb had won a competitive Middle Stakes over 1000m at Turffontein on Christmas Eve.

Marco produced Gavin Jooste's three-year-old filly with a sustained run from last to first in a fast-run sprint against the males, which takes some doing. And her manner of winning was eye-catching. She quickened beautifully, sliced effortlessly through the field and won, hard-held!

"This was most impressive, we are chuffed," said Corne Spies. "We've always thought highly of her, if you look through our blogs you will see and now, on the evidence of this win, we can start aiming her at small features. There is one coming up in January."

Flowerbomb was a R50,000 buy for Jooste at the Mistico Cape Sale and Corne said: "Gavin is a big supporter of the sport and our yard and every owner deserves a buy like this, a 'cheapie' that goes on to retrun the purchase price over and over. Thanks to him for his support, we'll be crossing fingers she can pick up a feature race."

Spies racing, with Corne and Tobie attending sales, have always used a 10-point system of assessment when they look at yearlings or two-year-olds for potential buyers and their success is well documented and recognised in South Africa.

"Thanks also to Laurence Wernars for breeding Flower Bomb. He is starting to make inroads as a breeder, another who deserves his success."

Flower Bomb is by Erupt from Daffodil, by Fastnet Rock. She's three from eight, with stake earnings just short of R200,000.

Well-related Above The World can win again

Owner Gavin Jooste's good run of winners continues. His filly Above The World led from gun to tape for her first win over 1000m at the Vaal on Thursday, 1 December. Marco van Rensburg, still at the top of his game, steered her to victory.

Corne Spies noted: "Above The World is on the small side and she just gets 1000m, but she has good pace and I think she's a nice type that can win again. She's by Captain Of All from Twinkle Star, a full-sister to our filly What You Are, who won the Listed Devon Air Stakes and was second to Cockney Pride in the G2 Golden Slipper. Both were bred by Terry Andrews at Sorrento.

"Gavin bought Above The World and the talented Flowerbomb at the Bloodstock SA Cape Sale and he's had a good return on his investment, on the pair. We are pleased for him and his pattonage is valued, we're hoping for many more!"

Share Holder (Zofanny, AUS) surprised the stable with a good win after finishing strongly for in-form Marco van Rensburg in a MR97 Handicap over 1600m at the Vaal on 17 November.

Corne Spies commented: “He’s a good work horse, he’s impressed in his time with us, but I don’t think we’ve figured him out yet. There is more to come from him.”

Corne added: “Share Holder holds his breath when he gallops, so we fitted him with a tongue tie which seemed to do the trick. I’d like to get to the bottom of him. He’s a decent type of horse. If you look back to his early career he wasn’t far off the best in a G2 Guineas and a G1 Guineas. Thanks to his owner Dr Sagie Naidoo for his support.”

Corne also thanked Dr Matthew Bawden, the course veterinarian. “Share Holder broke loose and ran around a bit, but Dr Bawden had a look and declared him fit to race, so it was an 'all is well that ends well' story.”

Note: Irontail ran a poor race when fancied, in a race later on the day. Corne said: “We cannot explain his run. There were no problems after the race. He was examined by our Dr Melandie Taljaardt and two other veterinarians, they couldn’t find anything wrong, so we are puzzled by his performance.”

Promising three-year-old Kentallen Bay (Eightfold Path) bounced back with his third win from his last four starts at Turffontein on 18 November. “He suffered some trouble at the start last time and finished fourth. He was green again under the whip and under the lights, but won well again. He’s a talented horse, we’ll be looking at a feature for him once his rating catches up. Well done again to his owner/breeder David Makins, whose consistent Mcbesi finished third in the same race.”

Golden Aspen and Irontail game in winning!

Spies Racing is enjoying a fruitful several weeks with another pair of winners at Turffontein on Thursday, 10 November – the first two legs of the first Jackpot with a 45-1 Double.

In Race 5 over 1200m the very capable Golden Aspen (Pomodoro) posted her sixth career win under in-form Marco van Rensburg., racing from off the pace to collar the favourite on the line.

“I think that Golden Aspen is only now coming into her own with more maturity. She races with purpose, we love the way she’s run at the leaders from behind recently when given a chance, a real game filly for us,” Corne said.

Golden Aspen, a value Philip Kahan-bred, races for Coenie Strydom and partners Spies Racing and Jannie de Lange’s Waste Glass Recovery.

Next was Irontail (Pathfork) a half-brother to Monkood, who rallied well in a 150m Handicap to keep low flier Sequoia at bay in a thrilling finish in which Van Rensburg was again seen at his best.

Corne commented: “Irontail is a big, strong chestnut. He’s won two for us, we tried him over further and we think he’s a miler. He showed spirit today, he wanted to win. Thanks to Arne, Elaine, Bernard and Marie Botha, who bred him at Benmarne Stud.

“They’ve bred the last foal from their special mare, Amber Bouquet, this year, so it’s the end of an era. She’s done Benmarne proud. We have Irontail entered for a race at the Vaal again, next week. He drew Number One, we’ll be looking for another good run.”

Karin's Legacy enjoyed the extra

There was a lot to like about Karin's Legacy's Maiden win at the Vaal on 27 October.

The three-year-old filly by Crusade has shown up thereabouts over 1450m and 1600m, but came into her own over 1800m by stretching away easily for a 3.75-length win under Marco van Rensburg.

"This was encouraging, Karin's Legacy won with authority today and on the evidence of this run we can look forward to a nice career for her," said Corne Spies. "I think she'll do even better when we start racing her over 2000m and further."

Karin's Legacy is a home-bred owned by stalwarts David and Metta Makins, raised at Breedon Stud. She was named in honour of their late daughter.

Stamina test in Victory Moon

Corne Spies has opted to scratch the widely drawn William Robertson from Saturday's Grade 2 Allied-Steelrode Onamisson Mile and run him in the Grade 3 Victory Moon Stakes over 1800m a week later, writes DAVID THISELTON.

Spies said the thinking was that although the prize money was better in the Charity Mile a poor run in the latter race could lead to the draw being used as an excuse and he could then still "go barking up the wrong tree."

He was referring to the stamina question mark for the Rafeef gelding for his chief target, the Gauteng Summer Cup over 2000m.

From a good draw in the Victory Moon, Spies will be provided with a good indicator of whether he will have a chance of seeing out the Summer Cup 2000m and an informed decision can then be made to run him or not.

The yard could find nothing wrong with William Robertson after his victory last time in the Grade 2 Topbet Mike O'Connor Jo'burg Spring Challenge over 1450m, despite S'Manga Khumalo feeling something had been amiss before deciding to not ride him after reaching the start.

Spies does not hold anything against Khumalo, but will likely not use him for the Victory Moon because the top jockey would likely be retained for rides elsewhere in the Summer Cup.

He would like his Victory Moon jockey to get to know him ahead of the Summer Cup, so is looking out for a rider.

Marco van Rensburg looks to be the favourite at present, because he rides a lot of work for the Spies yard and knows William Robertson quite well.

William Robertson is going to have a big baring on the Summer Cup whether he runs or not, because he is the highest merit rated horse among the entries and the will thus have a vital influence on the weights.

Spies is confident of a good run on Saturday from Imperial Ruby, the gallant front-runner who runs in the Listed Java Stakes over 2400m.

He felt Kwite A Trip might be a bit outgunned in the Golden Loom Handicap over 1000m, but added he had stumbled last time and then clipped heels so that run was all wrong and he could do better.

Flowerbomb and Cian The Conqueror impress

Gavin Jooste has been a staunch supporter of our yard, he has invested and is plucking fruits, we are very pleased for him.

Corne saddled a pair of Gavin's winners within a few days when his filly Flowerbomb (Erupt – Daffodil), won her second career race from just five starts in a Handicap over 1000m at the Vaal on 27 October. She was bred by Laurence Wernars and Chase Maujean rode her well.

Then, on Charity Mile Day, 29 October, Cian The Conqueror (William Longsword – Pretty Wendy) sprung a surprise in the opener when he ran on well for a win over Munchkin in what looked like an above-average Maiden field. Marco van Rensburg was impressed, so is the stable and we think both three-year-olds will win their fair share of races. Well done to Gavin!

This was evident in his giving weight to most of his rivals in a Progress Plate over 1450m at Turffontein, and beating them.

William Robertson wins after drama at start

Corne was 10 years older after the race!

Saturday’s gutsy Gr2 Topbet Mike O’Connor Joburg Spring Challenge winner William Robertson is one of the soundest horses in the Corne Spies yard.

Despite top jockey Smanga Khumalo dramatically getting off at the start of the Turffontein feature, the veteran trainer says that there are no hard feelings and all roads now point to the Gauteng Summer Cup.

“Racing can be a rollercoaster of a game some days. It takes us to cloud nine and before we know it, dumps us right in the mud. When Smanga got off William Robertson at the start, I think I probably aged ten years. It’s tough enough winning Grade 2 races on any given day, without having a jockey change his mind at the start! But we respect that it’s Smanga’s life and limb and his prerogative, no matter how unpopular it may be, to make the call. But thankfully the course Vet Dr Bawden had the courage of his professional conviction to make a decision in a pressure situation. And Muzi Yeni, what a soldier! He never blinked or hesitated,” recounted Corne Spies in a chat with the Sporting Post on Monday, after his jockey had baled at the start of the Gr2 Topbet Mike O’Connor Joburg Spring Challenge.

As to understanding Smanga Khumalo’s concerns, Corne says that he had not spoken to the former champion jockey but that his agent Monty Mariemuthoo had been in touch.

“William Robertson is genuinely the toughest and soundest horse in my yard. I can only think that he stood in a hole or maybe stepped awkwardly en route to the start. He certainly came back fine and I had a long hard look on Sunday. I couldn’t find anything. This morning Dr Melandie Taljaardt gave him an intensive examination and he is sound as a bell. But they are flesh and blood and not machines – so there are no green or red lights to guide us either,” laughed a relieved Corne.

William Robertson started favourite and won the feature by a quarter length. We asked Corne whether his charge was stopping in the closing stages as the flashy grey After The Rain looked dangerous late.

“That’s an interesting question. If one watches William Robertson in the closing stages in relation to the third and fourth horses, then he is clearly not stopping. So that means After The Rain put up a really courageous showing to come back so strongly. And, while I initially thought William would go away late in the race, it is also a reality that Muzi went quite early on him into the home straight. It’s very difficult for any horse to maintain that anaerobic momentum for 600m. So looking at things in perspective, I’m very pleased with the outcome – to put it mildly!”

So where to now for the Ridgemont Highlands bred son of the exciting Rafeef?

“I’m thinking about the Summer Cup. He has won from 1100m to 1400m and is possessed of smart speed. But I believe that given the right kind of ride, he could get the 2000m. His sire is outstanding – having produced Gr1 winners from 1000m to 2400m. So who knows? I’d certainly like to give him a chance to prove me wrong!”

On the prospects of a tilt at the Cape riches, Corne suggests that the L’Ormarins King’s Plate could be the right race.

“I don’t have the depth in my string right now to locate to the Cape for any extended period of time. If we do go, we will raid. But for now, it seems best to go the Charity Mile route into the Summer Cup – and then weigh up our options thereafter.”

Corne has an experienced team, including his legendary Dad Tobie, former jockey Fransie Naude and Charlene Tucker. “My team, including my Grooms, are top notch. I’m very fortunate.”

He has three barns at Randjesfontein and says that he has a substantially smaller operation than in the pre covid years. He has gone from a peak of 160 to 60 horses.

“But so have many guys scaled down. I would have waited years to get three barns at Randjes in years gone by. Look at the Vaal – it’s probably at 50% or less capacity. So it shows that we have all felt the effects of the recent past.”

A thinking man, Corne says he is worried about the racing economy and it all hinges on stakes.

“Better stakes mean more people are prepared to spend more cash on acquiring horses, which influences breeders to breed more horses, which has the effect of raising the equine population. This means better fields and improved turnovers, and thus more fiscal octane into the racing engine. At this juncture, I must take my hat off to the Cape guys. They have started by improving stakes and incentives. So the ball is rolling and there is some really good momentum down there. Look at the improved attendances and turnovers – that doesn’t happen unless they are doing something right! I hope our administrators up here can do something soon.” - Sporting Post.

Home-breds impress at Vaal!

Three-year-old Kentallen Bay followed his recent impressive Maiden 1450m win at Turffontein with another commanding performance as he sped away from his rivals in a Novice Handicap over 1600m at the Vaal, Tuesday.’

Kentallen Bay’s first win was marked by greenness and he was again running around this time, the encouraging fact being that he will improve even more when he is more experienced.

“He’s still learning, ran from the outside to the inside and won with ease, so it looks like he’s an nice, up-and-coming three-year-old we’ll be having some fun with,” said Corne Spies.

Kentallen Bay is a home-bred from David Makins’ Breedon Stud, who has been churning out winners for decades for the stable’s veteran patron. He’s by Eightfold Path from Respect At Bay, not a fashionable pedigree, but typical of many Breedon-raised runners, resilient and bred to be competitive.

Arne Botha and family of Blue Horizon Bay near Port Elizabeth love their breeding and racing and they were delighted with a win by five-year-old Irontail (Pathfork), the half-brother to Monks Hood and Prophet. He won on his Highveld debut over 1450m and Corne commented:

“We expected him to need the run more than he did and that he won was pleasing, because there is definitely improvement to come. He’s enjoying his new surroundings and I think he’ll be effective over a bit further too. We’re looking forward to see how he goes from here.”

Both Tuesday winners were well handled by Marco van Rensburg, who continued his good winning strike rate for the stable.

A big day among the best!

Corne Spies ended the 2021/2 season on a high note when the stable earned R375,000 in stakes money for owners at Greyville on Gold Cup Day – and that’s without having a winner!

On a day of high-quality racing, racing fans were fortunate to see runners like Cousin Casey, Captain’s Ransom and Shangani in action – the Spies runners had to play second fiddle to these hugely talented horses with a G1 second (Mercury Sprint) a G1 fourth ([Prophet) and a G3 second (Imperial Ruby).

That’s three Graded level placings on a spectacular day with most of the country’s top horses in action – nothing to be frowned upon in this league and ensuring that the stable jumped two positions into 16 ^th spot on the final National Log for 2021/2. (45 winners, 174 places, R4,5-million stakes).

Corne said: “It’s been a good season for us with Grade 3 wins by William Robertson, Supreme Quest and Prophet from a small string of runners. William had to bump Captain’s Ransom on Saturday from a wide draw, went down by under half a length to arguably one of the greatest fillies ever to race in South Africa.

Her time was faster than the time set by our Van Halen in 2020 and a split second outside the course record, testimony to how good William Robertson ran. He’s a top horse now rated as one, so we’ll have to run in set-weights races to be competitive. But he’s talented enough, could have a good summer.”

“Imperial Ruby loves Greyville, ran his heart out in the Gold Cup and got oh so close to winning – he’ll be back next season, a warrior over long distances and maybe we can pick up another feature with him. Prophet took his run on the inside rail where it may have been flat on the day, I expected him to get closer but it was still a noteworthy performance to Cousin Casey who really is a top young horse. But ours is consistent and talented, one to watch this summer.”

Corne has almost completed a move of all the runners to Randjesfontein and he’s looking forward to the new season. “There are just a few more to come over from the Vaal but this will be our first full season from Randjes and we’re set for good times,” he noted.

Two weeks, six winners!

The stable normally enjoys good form all year round, but we especially love our good runs around Durban July time. Our game filly Snow Palace (headline photo) kept our good Durban July Day record going with her sixth career win in front of a big ‘July’ crowd.

Snow Palace (Potala Palace) is owned by by Dr Melandie Taljaardt, Xander Spies, Rob and Sue Macnab and Melandie said: “A winner on July day with my most beautiful grey machine Snow Palace! So proud of my big girl.”

It was a special evening too for the stable’s long-time patrion and friend Rob Macnab, for whom Snow Palace was a wonderful 250th winner.

Corne said:”July days have been great for us. We had three winners three years ago with Cockney Pride, Van Halen and Basilius, then came Nourbese in 2020 and Supreme Quest in 2021 and now Snow Palace. We’ll be back for more next year!”

Marco van Rensburg rode four of our five other winners over the last two weeks, well done to him for top class rides and using his chances with us!

Another win for ‘Prince William’!

William Rob ertson just keeps getting better – he’s a big, powerful horse who loves his racing.

Just a few days after his terrific Greyville win in the Durban Dash, he put few more talented sorts properly in their place in a 1400m Pinnacle Stakes, once again under SManga Khumalo.

William Robertson has now won five races from 14 starts and he’s long not done, with the G2 Post Merchants over 1200m on July Day his next mission.

“He’s talented and versatile,” said Corne Spies. “Good horses can win over any distance and I think he’ll even perform up to 2000m. He’s an exciting runner to be involved with.”

William Roberston rules!

Three-year-old William Robertson was exceptional in his beating of an above average field in Saturday’s Rising Sun Durban Dash over 1100m at Greyville.

William Robertson was perfectly placed behind hot pace-setter Faustino, produced for a finishing effort at the right time to blow away G1 winner Master Archie by almost four lengths, with another G1 winner Ambiorex a further five lengths back.

He was popularly considered to be better over 1400m and even further, but William Robertson has always had a touch of true class and his ability to sprint with some of the fastest around is meritorious indeed.

Jockey SManga Khumalo commented: “He was a bit aggressive with me early, then settled and when I asked him there was a lot to come. He started hanging, but when I changed my stick he straightened and it was race over.”

Said Corne Spies: “I’ve always preached William Robertson. He was unlucky with draws in the classics earlier this year. We decided to bring him back to a sprint and put the blinkers on, this was a very pleasing win.”

Prophet had no galloping room

Two-year-old Prophet finished seventh in Saturday’s G1 Gold Medallion at Scottsville, a race he was expected to win and for which he started favourite, but Corne Spies believes his runner would have gone close if not for interference at the 400m-mark.

The Stipes report states: “Approaching the 400m, PROPHET (C Zackey) had to ease when tightened for galloping room between the inside running rail and NOW I GOT YOU (M Yeni) who was carried in by OCEAN TIME (D Dillon), who (in turn) rolled in.

Consequently, PROPHET (C Zackey) was switched out around the field and covered 10 horse widths to obtain a clear run. In assessing this incident, the Board was of the opinion that there were multiple contributory movements surrounding this incident and therefore could not apportion blame to any individual rider. As a result, no further action was taken.”

Being drawn on the rail and cramped for a run, Prophet had no option but to pull back and wide – and Zackey had to go around the entire field, pausing a further split second for a possible gap before he got to the widest horse. This, Corne reckons, cost Prophet at least the five lengths he was beaten by.

He said: ‘Listen, it’s no use crying about spilt milk. The result’s in the frame and we take it on a chin. But one has to consider that we beat Gladatorian by 3,80-lengths just a few weeks ago, easing down. Gladatorian finished ahead of us in third on Saturday, beaten the exact same 3.80-lengths by the winner, Thunderstruck. So draw a line through the run, Prophet is better than this.”

Corne will be pointing Prophet at the G1 Golden Horseshoe over 1400m on Durban July Day. “I think he will be suited to 1400m and maybe we can have a rematch with Sean Tarry’s Thunderstruck. It will be interesting, he looks a smart colt.”

Snow Palace game again!

Snow Palace, our five-year-old grey mare, was considered at the top of her game when she won a MR82 Handicap at the Vaal earlier this month, and she produced another show of courage with a MR84 Handicap win over 1800m on the Greyville Polytrack, 25 May.

Craig Zackey (Snow Palace) and Richard Fourie (Rotunda) engaged in a tussle over the last 250m and Snow Palace kept her challenger gamely at bay, winning by a long neck.

The most exciting races to win are arguably those where your runner shows spirit like this and Corne Spies said: “Snow Palace loves Greyville. She’s had a G1 and G2 place here earlier in her career.”

He thanked her owners, saying: “It’s always nice to have a winner for Xander, Rob Macnab, a long-time patron in the stable, and Melandie Taljaardt. Rob and Melandie love the greys, it’s always a tug-of-war between them!”

Snow Palace is a Favour Stud-bred by Potala Palace. She’s won five races with 12 places and a shade under R500,000 in stakes.

She likes the Vaal best

Barring a few below-par runs, Scottadito has been a consistent earner for partners Ian Tasman, Jannie de Lange, Xander Spies and Francois Naude, and she came flashing home for a deserved second career win at the Vaal on Tuesday, 10 May.

Scottadito was a rank outsider at 40-1, her good form at the Vaal ignored by punters, and Corne put her back over shorter. She enjoyed the 1200m and encouraging was that she kept fighting for Marco van Rensburg when fast-finishing Into The Light came to fetch her in the last 100m.

Scottadito is by Master Of My Fate from Full Regalia (Captain Al) and is a graduate of Oldlands Stud.

Snow Palace in top form

Snow Palace had been showing exceptional work and with her drop in rating (MR105 – MR78), she finally managed a well-deserved fourth career win under S’Manga Khumalo at the Vaal on Tuesday.

“It’s nice to get the nod from a trainer and to ride a fit horse,” said Khumalo after assistant trainer Francois Naude had given him all the pre-race confidence he needed.

Overdue win

Mcebisi has been knocking at the door over distances up to 2000m – he finally cracked his Maiden win over 1450m at Turffontein under Sherman Brown.

This wasn’t a strong field, but Mcebisi moved up smartly and won with some confidence. He may quite well win again, because his versatility brings options.

Mcebisi is a four-year-old owned by long-time stable patron David Makins, who continues to enjoy racing with his home-breds. This gelding is by Byword from a mare by Jallad.

A four-winner week!

Corne Spies enjoyed a super late April week with two winners apiece in two centres, and nice momentum going into the KZN Champions Season. Craig Zackey booted home all four of them.

High FlyBy, unplaced against colts at Greyville ten days ago, travelled up and down from her home base to take on her own sex in a Polytrack race over 1400m on Monday, 18 April, had no trouble this time and won by 2,75-lengths.

“High FlyBy is by Ideal World, so she’s improving as she matures and I believe she’s a filly that will win again,” said Corne, who races this one in partnership with Alfred Pawson and Jannie De Lange’s Waste Glass Recovery.

Bevoeterd, pulled no punches.

Bevoeterd seems to enjoy soft going and finally found the right race to win his Maiden at the Vaal on Tuesday. He’s by Anger (BRZ) the Elusive Quality horse who was Champion Sprinter for Corne on the old Vaal sand track. Corne said: “Anger was very fast, but didn’t get support as a stallion, he died after siring two small crops and is one of those sad stories of a stallion that could’ve made it if he was given some good mares.

“Jannie Meyer bred Bevoeterd, he is Anger’s only’s representative on track, he is no star but tries hard, maybe he can pick up one more,” Corne assessed.

Newcomer Prophet (Querari) is a full brother to the exported Dingaans winner Monk’s Hood and on that alone has a future. His first racetrack performance at the Vaal on Thursday was enough to suggest that he is one who could go places too.

Prophet, 4.25-length winner.

Corne said: “I expected him to win, but not this easily, so this was impressive. He looked green and all at sea going through the 600m but when he found his rhythm he just put them to bed, he raced on by and won going away.”

Corne will be aiming Prophet at several Kwazulu-Natal features. There is a G3 coming up soon, followed by the G1 Gold Medallion at the end of May and the two-year-old feature on July day. He is one to watch.

The stable was very pleased to train this winner for Arne Botha and family of Benmarne Stud, represented on course by Izak Bergh. “We’ll hold thumbs Prophet can fulfill his obvious potential,” Corne said.

Imperial Ruby, well ridden.

Stalwart stayer Imperial Ruby (Silvano), was due to run at Greyville last week and had to remain in KZN for the week due to postponement of the meeting to Friday. But it was all worth while as he took the Highland Night Cup over 2400m under a well-judged ride from Zackey – his second stayer’s feature and seventh career win for Pawson, Xander Spies, Suzette and Basie Viljoen and Spies Racing.

“Imperial Ruby a soldier. We’ll go next for the OK Gold Bowl, a race he won as a three-year-old, and then we’ll look at races like the Gold Vase and the Gold Cup later this season in KZN,” said Corne.

A sweet win in good company

Sweet Sensation (VAR) posted a gutsy third career win in a MR90 handicap over 1000m at the Vaal on Thursday and Corne Spies was chuffed.

“She’s a consistent filly and I liked the way she fought on to win this race, there was pressure over the last 250m and she kept fending them off. It was a small field but she had Before The Dawn, Rozara and Big Eyed Girl nipping at her heels.”

Corne praised S’Manga Khumalo for a strong ride: “We don’t get to use S’Manga that often, he rode his customary strong finish and we benefitted.”

Successful raid brings G3 win!

Corne raided KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend and returned with four stake cheques from four runners, including a smart win by Supreme Quest (Anton Marcus) in the Umzimkhulu Stakes (G3) over 1400m at the Greyville meeting moved from Scottsville.

He said: “Supreme Quest thoroughly deserved this win. She’s been a model of consistency throughout her career and if you look at her formline she’s been versatile from 1000m to 1600m against the best fillies in the country including Rain In Holland, Big Burn and Under Your Spell, all Graded winners.”

Corne thanked part-owners owners Warren Chetty, Seren Govender and Anthony Seur for their support – they were on course to with a group of their friends to enjoy the moment. “It was the first time Seren could be at the track for Supreme Quest winning a race, so I am very happy for them and their friends, it’s always great to have a group of people who can share wins like these.”

Supreme Quest was bred by Gold Star Stud, she’s by Querari from Supreme Lecture (Lecture) and has run 13 times for 3 wins and 10 places, earning in excess of R600,000.

William Robertson was expected to go close in the G3 Byerley Turk, but he was slow off the mark, had to be pulled wide in the straight and stayed on for fifth.

“He’s a big horse and he’s not comfortable at the pens. Being slow away at a tight track like this is not something we wanted, but he’ll be back to show his worth. He would have been more comfortable on the longer straight at Scottsville,” Corne assessed.

Three-year-old filly Western View won her Maiden at her second attempt at the Vaal last Thursday and she’s one to watch, reckons Corne Spies.

“Western View is a filly with some ability, she won’t stop here,” he said about the daughter of Global View. “When we entered her for the first time she broke through the pens, ran into the rail and hurt the bone above her eye. This took a long time to heal and she was out for a while.

“We brought her back to the track for her first run last month, she finished a few lengths off over 1000m and needed the experience, she was green. But the run did her the world of good, she was more sensible on Thursday, enjoyed the extra 200m and won a nice race for us.”

Western View races for the partnership of Suzette and Basie Viljoen, Sicha Govender, Xander Spies and Spies Racing. She’s an Ascot Stud graduate who fetched R160,000 at the 2020 BSA National Two-Year-Old Sale.

“It’s super to have the champion owners in the yard, thanks to Suzette and Basie and also a welcome back to Sicha, who had a number of horses a few years ago and has returned to the game.”

She gives all of her!

All Of Me has really given her all, throughout her four-year racetrack career, now with 13 wins and 27 places to her name since her debut in May 2018.

Rising seven years of age, she’s as keen to race as the day she stepped onto the track, and as speedy as ever, proven by her zestful 1000m win at the Vaal on 7July.

“She has many handicap wins around the MR85 to MR92 mark,” said Corne Spies, who has expertly placed All Of Me and kept her sound for the last four-and-a-half years.

“Unless we get a nice offer from a breeder well keep her in training a while longer. She is a 13-time winner by VAR, emerging as a top broodmare sire, so there is every chance she’ll make a success at stud.”

Meanwhile, All Of Me is just short of the R1-million mark in earnings with runs to come off a MR94 on the Polytrack at Greyville on 18 July and Scottsville on 20 July. “She’s drawn well on the Poly and we’re hoping the opposition proves to be just a little weaker in KZN than on the Highveld so she can earn again,” said Corne.

Scottadito Gets It Right!

The feeling of having never won a race is one any race horse will never forget.

Three-year-old Scottadito took nine runs to win her Maiden. The beauty of it is that when she did so at the Vaal on Thursday it was a spectacular and impressive performance.

It was a three-length success in a full field, and with a length or two in hand over the tough straight 1400m Scottadito was able to clinch victory.

Scottadito’s jockey, Warren Kennedy, went on to express his delight, “She won a really good race, she was looking around and won with a bit in the tank. I think with blinkers on and over a bit more ground she’ll win again,”.

A confident statement from the accomplished jockey, who, at the time of writing has won over 1300 races, with a 10% win ratio and 30% place finish.

Scottadito has found a place in every run and looks to be improving as she goes ahead. The more the mare matures, the more confident she gets, which means she can only get better.

We’re expecting big things for Scottadito in the near future as she takes on her next race.

“She’s been a little ATM machine for us,” said Corne Spies. He added, “She’s done us proud, well done to the partners Ian Tasman, Jannie de Lange, Xander Spies and Francois Naude, and to Oldlands Stud for breeding her. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of her!”

Back with Vaal double!

The stable bounced right back after a few quiet weeks with a fine double at the Vaal on Saturday.

Linganomore (Byword) and Golden Aspen (Pomodoro) won, and Noble Striker finished second in the Vaal Grand Heritage.

Overall it was quite an impressive display with trainers and riders picking up two clear victories at the Vaal.

Linganomore won a thriller of a finish in a MR87 handicap over 1700m under Sherman Brown, defeating Escape Artist in a bob-of-the-nose affair.

Brown went on to thank owner and breeder David Makins for his long-time support.

“Also thanks to Corne for his support. We have quite a few young horses in the yard to come through later this season.”

Corne echoed the praise for the veteran owner and wife Metta, whose success in the stable goes back to the halcyon days of Yardmaster, Fast Gun and Mysterious Hal in the late 1980s.

“Linganomore was impressive and her win was all the more encouraging because she had a rain-interrupted prep and we couldn’t get all the work into her we wanted to.”

Golden Aspen was not without reasonable form coming into a 1500m handicap race and her 40-1 starting price was not a reflection of her chance. She proved that with a decent win following a nice turn of foot.

“I let her use her stride and we had a tailwind, she won a good race,” said jockey Ryan Munger.

Corne commented: “Again, an encouraging win by Golden Aspen, we done to Philip Kahan for breeding her and to our partners Coenie Strydom and Jannie de Lange. Her light weight helped today.”

William Robertson Likes To Win!

It was a beautiful day at the Turffontein race course where we saw William Robertson take on the 1400m race.

William Robertson is an imposing horse that stands tall with a major size advantage over his three year old rivals. The additional big heart means he had the power to push himself over the 1400m.

The son of Rafeef, William Robertson was victorious with a win in the Gr3 Tony Ruffel Stakes. He was headed inside the last 250m but managed to claim the win by a short head from Outofthedarkness and Prince Of Fire.

Ryan Munger commented with enthusiasm in his voice, “He’s strong and tough and when you think he’s gone, he gives you more,”. A showcasing of intent from the young William Robertson.

Munger continued, “I took the bull by the horns, let him stride out front. They came past him, but he likes to fight, he enjoys a challenge. This was a dogged win.”

“I think 1600m will suit him well now, but step by step. He’s a good horse, he gives me gooseflesh,” added Munger.

Corne Spies went on to say, “Accolades to Ryan, he rode a good race dictating the pace. Wlliam Robertson looked beaten at the 200m mark but came back to win. He’s a top three-year-old.”
