The Corne Spies stable enjoyed a wonderfully successful Durban July courtesy of Rock Of Bismantova and Golden Aspen (Vaal, Thursday 4 July) and Chocolate Soldier (HWB Greyville on Saturday, 6 July).


Rock Of Bismantova (Futura) was considered to have needed the run after a break, but he got away from his opposition in a Work Riders Plate and kept going well under Tsepiso Motsoela. "I knew I had to wait a bit longer, but Rock Of Bismantova pinged the gates and I dropped my stick. I knew someone was going to chase us. He looked magnificent, my heart was pumping," said Motsoela.


Rock Of Bismantova races for Sitha Govender, Chris Brown and stable stalwart Rob Macnab, who celebrated his birthday on the day.

Golden Aspen (Pomodoro) won Race 6 over 1200m under a well-judged ride from Marco van Rensburg. This was her ninth career win, amazing progress in her fifth year from a mare who took 12 runs to win her Maiden, and testimony to the care and expertise she has been handled with. Golden Aspen has now earned over R700,000 for Gavin Jooste, Xander Spies and Spies Racing.

One can safely argue that Chocolate Soldier's connections looked overjoyed at the glittering Durban July ! (JC Photos).

Chocolate Soldier (One World) is maturing with every start, he is far more sensible now than he was just a few months ago, and ready to fulfill his potential. He beat a field of competitive runners in a handicap on the Polytrack, once again professionally handled by Van Rensburg.


On course were owners Rob Macnab, Sergio Poriazis and Jose Suares, with other partners Chris Brown (UK) and Izak Bergh watching from home.


"We've got his mouth right with the right bit, he has a fantastic future. His game is 1000m!"
